10 Cloverfield Lane: A Sequel or Nah
Spoiler Alert! This is a disclaimer that my reviews can contain spoilers for the movies that have been reviewed.
When I saw the preview 10 Cloverfield Lane, I thought of the horror film Cloverfield (2008), when aliens attacked the people in New York City. Both movies were produced by J.J. Abrams, but Cloverfield was video footage coming from the character’s personal camera whereas 10 Cloverfield Lane was filmed like an original movie. So, is 10 Cloverfield Lane a sequel? After watching it, it could be…
After a horrifying car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) found herself chained to a pipe in a creepy underground bunker. Howard (John Goodman) informs her of an attack, could be Russians, aliens, not sure, and the air is contaminated. Michelle was in disbelief and demanded to be released. Michelle eventually was released after she calmed down. She met Emmett (John Gallagher, Jr.) who was another occupant in the bunker and wounded. Emmett explains that he saw the attack and was fighting his way into the bunker. Michelle came to terms that she will be living in this bunker with these guys for a year or two.
For a while, Michelle, Howard and Emmett become a civilized family, watching movies, playing games and listening to music. I was amused when all of the hidden truths came out in the middle of the movie instead of the end. Howard’s character becomes more of a territorial and dangerous man and Michelle wants out. Michelle and Emmett designed and made a Hazmat suit to prevent airborne contamination when they escape. Howard knows something is up and confronts them both. Emmett lied to protect Michelle which didn’t seem like a big deal. Yet, Howard didn’t take it as lightly and shoots Emmett point blank.
Though in shock, Michelle took action and figured a way out where Howard could not get even close. Smart! She was free. The air was clean and clear. When she thought all her troubles were over, everything went left. The contamination surrounds her and she get attacked… but by what? Once she drives off, the question is what should she do now? Or what should she have done?
Stay in a underground bunker with a dangerous man or face a world that’s contaminated and under attack?
What would you do?
All in all, I give this movie 2.5 out of 4 Stars
