Top 5 Wines of the Year of 2017

Our Top 5 Wines of the Year of 2017

, by

It’s that time when we list our top wines of the year. It is always a difficult task. We consume between 150 to 200 different bottles of wine every year. So, we have a lot to choose from and it always leads to great debates. However, we never shy away from a lively discussion about wine. As usual, our top wines are always under $30 a bottle. These consists of wines that we find ourselves drinking over and over throughout the year. They are usually easy to get, meaning that most wine stores will carry them. They are definitely available online. We rate our wines by using four different standards. Is the wine balanced? What impression does the wine give? What is the complexity of the wine? Does this wine have a good finish? Each wine mention below was given an excellent or above rating by Vibes and Vino.

Monastrell by Juan Gil Winery

It is quite amazing that these wine tastes so good especially knowing that the Monastrell grapes that make up this wine comes from vineyards planted on very poor and stony limestone soil with few nutrients and lack of irrigation. Yet, this is a very well-constructed wine that has a clean aroma of blackberry and bilberry. The taste is the same with and added dose of licorice and cherry. This medium bodied wine is elegant with a 15% alcohol consistency. (Vibes and Vino Rating – 92)

2015 Director’s Cut Pinot Noir by Francis Ford Coppola Winery

This is one of our favorite wineries to visit each year and we always look forward to sampling their new offerings. This year the Director’s Cut Pinot Noir was not left on our chopping room floor. It definitely made the cut. This wine is well concentrated and silky texture and gives off an aroma of plums, raspberries, cloves, and a small hint of tea leaves. The sweet juicy flavors of cherries, pomegranates, vanilla and toasted oak seals the deal. (Vibes and Vino Rating – 90)

2015 Red Bordeaux by Château Haut Maginet

This is easily one of the best structured wines that we had all year. The Merlot brings color, roundness and fruitiness while the Cabernet gives it finesse and richness. There is an aroma and taste of blackberry, plums, and a mild hint of chocolate. (Vibes and Vino Rating – 90)

2012 Red Skulls Blend by Chateau Chateau This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mataro raised in stainless steel. You know how we love the Grenache grape at Vibes and Vino. This wine does not disappoint and is filled with the aroma and taste of cherries, oranges, cinnamon spices, strawberry, and oak. The best part is the price. It is unbelievably reasonable at less than $15. (Vibes and Vino Rating – 92)

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon by Avalon Winery

This has become one of our go to wines for dinner this year. This wine is the product of the best that California has offer. According to Avalon, “Lodi (region) adds the Yum Factor represented in wines from warm growing regions. Lodi’s east side vineyards’ red soil and Mediterranean climate produce rich wines with plush tannins. The Paso Robles vineyard selections add powerful elegance as well as dark fruit flavors and deep crimson color. Monterey’s cooler climate adds bright red fruit and light herbal tones as well as acidity.” We love this wine so much that we even got some of the bottles signed. There’s aromas of plum, raisins, and ripe fruit. Although this is also added into the taste along with a little chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla. (Vibes and Vino Rating – 94)
